The iPad — My First Apple Computer

I recently bought an iPad. I have a lot of friends who have switched from a MS Windows laptop to a Macbook. I thought the iPad might be a kindler, gentler introduction to an Apple user experience for me. At least that’s the rationalization I give anyone who will listen. The real reason is that I got tired of doing all the technical support in our house and everyone else getting the new toys. Both my sons were jealous of my new iPad — mission accomplished.

Volunteering at Free Geek

Allen Greer Volunteers at Free Geek Vancouver

My son Allen and I have started volunteering at Free Geek Vancouver. Free Geek was founded to ethically recycle computers. While there are organizations that will recycle computers, many of them ship the computers off shore or otherwise violate internation conventions for the recycling of hazardous materials (computers have many). Not only does Free Geek insure that dead computers are recycled ethically and according with international conventions, it takes working computers and rebuilds them, offerring them for sale at very low prices. Most of the customers in the Free Geek Vancouver store come from Vancouver’s Downtown East Side, the poorest neighborhood in Canada.

Blown Off Course

Yesterday in Vancouver, where I live, there was a major storm. A cold front from Alaska brought Force 7 winds (gusts up to 100 km/hr) from the West. The resulting winds kicked up big waves in relatively protected English Bay. The wind and waves were enough to drive three sailboats on to Kitsilano beach.

Presentation Zen

In my new role as Director of Marketing and Sales for MB Foster Associates Limited, I’ve been reading and writing a lot of presentations. Like many, Microsoft PowerPoint ends up being my tool of choice. I’ve sat through thousands of presentations. Having been bullet pointed near to death, I decided that it was time that my presentations get a boost in style and impact.
