Change to Grow

Thirteen years ago, we sailed from Kos, Greece to Bodrum, Turkey. It was the last and shortest crossing between two countries of the two years that we lived and sailed in the Mediterranean. Our son Kevin was twelve as we sailed across the Aegean Sea. We have seen enormous change in Kevin over the intervening years as he met challenges, changed, and grew.

Today, Kevin starts his new job in Strategic IT at Deloitte after graduating from the University of British Columbia this spring. As a parent, it is gratifying to see your children have their own dreams, reach for their success, and start on their own adventures.

As I reflect on Kevin’s achievements, it reminds me of the experience of being a parent and a coach:

Comfort Zone: We have pushed and encouraged Kevin to get outside his comfort zone. We have to get uncomfortable in order to change and grow. We supported Kevin when he was stretching himself, without stepping in to solve his challenges. I similarly challenge my clients to get outside their comfort zones and then support them when they are in the midst of change, while letting them figure out their own path to success.

Setting Goals: Kevin decided to go to an International Baccalaureate School. This gave him a goal to reach towards. He has subsequently set other goals for himself, including playing Ultimate Frisbee for Canada at the International Level–a goal that he has succeeded at twice. When I work with clients, I help them get clear on their 3-year, 1-year, and quarterly goals for their business and their life.

Supporting Connections. None of us can do it all ourselves. Kevin has built an enormous support network around himself around his work, sport, and life. Karalee and I have made sure that we were always there for Kevin through thick and thin. Just as I am there for my clients when they are scared by the audacity of their dreams.

For me, one of the most satisfying moments in life is to see one of our children succeed. As a coach, I feel the same way when my clients succeed.

What are you waiting for?
