Video: How do you keep yourself and your teams on the path?

It is challenging for business owners, entrepreneurs, and CEOs to keep themselves and their teams pulling in the same direction. The analogy I use is that it is like keeping everyone on a well-defined path. In this video I share on yearly and quarerly goal setting, along with weekly meetings to keep you and your teams on the path while I literally in this video stray off the path.

How do you keep yourself and your teams on the path?

Hi, I’m Coach David J. Greer. Today I want to talk to you about keeping alignment with you and all of your team. You can tell that I’m walking down a path here in Pacific Spirit Park in Vancouver, my hometown.

Keeping everyone on the path is a good metaphor for what you need to do for your business, for you, and for your employees. For me this path was built by the Parks Board and is maintained by them. It’s pretty easy. All I have to do is continue down the path.

It’s hard for your business because you as the entrepreneur, the business owner, you’ve got to be the one who sets what the path is. The way I think you have to do that is to start with a clear set of goals for the year. I mean four or five clear goals for the year. Clear measurable goals so that everyone knows whether they are achieving them or not. Then I believe deeply in quarterly planning. That you need to set clear quarterly goals. Again, four maximum five goals per quarter. A quarter is thirteen weeks long. If you can keep everyone focused on a very small set of goals I think you can have success.

People will wander off the path like I am doing here. Into the bushes. You might not be able to tell, but I am in Pacific NW rain forest. You can tell that I’ve had to slow down to look every which way. Where am I putting my feet? That’s what people do when they get off the path in your business. You have to constantly keep reminding of the goals that you’ve got. Where it is that you want them to go. Let me escape back onto the path.

That means that on a daily or at least a weekly basis you need to be letting them know what the goals are for the quarter. And how you are progressing on the quarter. Another common problem I find with keeping alignment is that you the entrepreneur, the business owner, the leader, you need to keep to those goals. I find that most of us entrepreneurs suffer from shiny red ball syndrome where we get excited about the next shiny thing that we see. We start moving our focus to that. That defocuses us from the goals that we have set for the quarter. If you are going to keep everyone on the path, you have to be the leader who shows everyone that you are staying on the path.

Yearly goals, quarterly goals, and then weekly or daily keeping yourself and your team aligned to those goals.
