James Shaw Marketing Lessons Learned

Founded in 2004 by James Shaw, Twin Creek Media started out as digital media experts creating web sites for companies. Their initial marketing and sales efforts were anything but digital. A breakthrough moment, however, forced them to rethink their strategy to move in a new direction.

Early in his career James bounced from social work, to computer graphics, to a one-year stint selling financial products for Sun Life. That job convinced him that he didn’t want to do sales for a living. Still feeling unfulfilled, James decided to utilize some computer skills he had developed at an engineering job and moved into digital media.

He enrolled in a two-year digital marketing program in Kelowna, BC where he lived. While there, he and a couple of other students started selling their digital media skills and gaining their first clients, creating Twin Creek Media.

James started with the realization that taking his analytical, sales, and social skills and putting them together would be fun. Having to support a young family, he felt that the only viable option was to create his own business. Through good times and bad he has persevered so that Twin Creek Media is itself a trusted brand that delivers what companies need from their marketing efforts. Key thoughts from James’ experience include:

  1. Be prepared to put in the effort needed to get your brand out there, asking for business, from the outset.
  2. Know who your ideal customer is and the value that you bring to people like them.
  3. Use marketing strategy to differentiate your company from your competitors, even if this takes you in a dramatically new direction.
  4. Powerful communication, across numerous channels, creates belief and awareness for a company and its brand.
  5. Expect to fail, learn from each failure, and move on to your next challenge and success.
  6. Hire “can-do” people that are better than you at something.

Twin Creek Media are experts at marketing strategy and the revenue generating capability it provides to business owners. They also believe in what they sell, using the same marketing strategy to make Twin Creek Media a success.
